Treating skin disease
Arwyn on her first visit to David
Treating skin problems in cats and dogs can be tricky. There are some diseases that can be cured but many pets have problems due to an underlying allergy or because their skin does not work properly and for these patients special care has to be provided for the whole of their lives. There are usually some different options for this care and when deciding what to try the special character of the individual animal and the circumstances of the owner are very important.
What is vital here is obtaining an accurate and complete diagnosis of the fundamental cause of the problems and all the factors that are complicating the situation.
Changes in management such as a special diet, medicines, immunotherapy and surgery may all be helpful for an individual dog or cat and many patients have the best quality of life with a mixture of interventions. Some are cheap and some are expensive (especially as skin problems often require long-term treatments) and David is used to helping owners decide how to balance the welfare of their pets and keeping costs to a minimum.
